Working stables stood on the grounds of Bartram's Garden, the riverside estate on the Schuylkill that botanist John Bartram began cultivating in the 1728 period and that is often called the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America. By about 1908, when this glass-plate negative was made, the land was a public park, and the outbuildings served the horses and carriages of a city still reliant on animal power. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide range of American views, produced the image, so it records how a historic estate looked as the city absorbed it.
