The Louisiana Purchase Exposition opened in St. Louis in April 1904, marking the 100th anniversary of the 1803 land deal that doubled the United States. The fairgrounds sprawled across Forest Park, west of the city's built-up core, and drew millions of visitors over the months it ran through December. St. Louis was then one of the largest cities in the country, with breweries, meatpacking houses, shoe factories, and rail yards tied to the Mississippi and to the Missouri River. Fairgoers encountered exhibits from dozens of nations, the new Festival Hall, and a world's fair palace complex built of staff and plaster on a scale few Midwesterners had seen. The fair also gave the city a lasting parkland and public buildings, including what became the Missouri History Museum and the Art Museum.
