Ghirardelli Square, a cluster of red-brick buildings from the old Ghirardelli chocolate factory, sits above the water at the edge of Aquatic Park, and this view looks out across that lagoon from the complex. The factory closed early in the twentieth century, and in the 1960s its buildings were converted into shops and restaurants, one of the earlier examples of a historic industrial site in San Francisco being reused for retail rather than demolished. The photograph, taken in 1967, shows how the redevelopment sat within the working waterfront that surrounded it.
