Houdini stands on a raised platform in a bathing suit and chains while a crowd gathers before him, a pose that recalls the restraint escapes that made him famous in the early 1900s. The slide is a lantern slide, a glass positive projected onto a screen during live shows, and its catalog notes name John H. Thurston, a touring stage magician who also used stereopticon slides. The McManus-Young Collection at the Library of Congress preserves many such slides from the magic trade, offering a record of how performers promoted their acts to audiences before printed posters and film reached every town.
