Children splashing and swimming without clothes in the East River give this scene its unusual subject, since most pictures from the Bain collection show streets, crowds, or public events. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news images to newspapers in the early 1900s. Riverside swimming was common among city children of that era, especially in crowded neighborhoods where few public pools existed and summer heat was hard to escape. The image records a informal form of recreation that public bathhouses and supervised pools would later gradually replace.
