Ocean City, on Maryland's Atlantic coast, is the subject here, with its boardwalk running along the beach as the town's central promenade. The photograph dates from roughly 1920 to 1940, a period when seaside resorts along the Eastern Seaboard drew growing numbers of visitors by automobile and rail for swimming, strolling, and amusements. The Wittemann Collection, from which this print comes, holds many such views of American resort life, so the image also serves as a record of how people spent leisure time between the world wars. Look closely at the boardwalk's crowds and open beachfront to get a sense of the casual, public character of these early resort promenades.
