Few things in the Navy's early history were as new as a submarine slipping down the ways, and this 1909 view records the launch of the *Snapper* at the Fore River Works in Quincy, Massachusetts. By the time of the launch, the submarine had moved from experimental curiosity to a working part of the fleet, and the Navy was still learning how to build, handle, and maintain these small, cramped vessels. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news pictures that captured events of the early twentieth century as they happened.
