The Navy's first atomic-powered submarine, USS Nautilus (SS-571), is shown here on its initial sea trials, which began out of Groton, Connecticut, in January 1955. The ship was built by Electric Boat, and its reactor let it run submerged for long stretches without refueling or surfacing for air, a major change from the diesel-electric boats that came before it. The Navy's photographers documented these early runs to record how the new propulsion performed at sea. Nautilus's first trials helped prove that nuclear power could work in a submarine, a step that shaped the fleet for decades.
