A Japanese plane goes down in flames as it tries to attack the escort carrier USS Kitkun Bay on June 18, 1944, during the U.S. drive through the Mariana Islands. The June 1944 fighting in the Philippine Sea was a crucial test of American naval air power, and Japanese carrier aircraft that had survived the day's battle often sought to strike American ships at dusk. This official Navy photograph captures one of those moments, when the escort carrier's defenses turned back an attack. Its record shows it was taken as part of the Navy's documentation of the Pacific war.
