The Army Air Forces photoprint shows Nagasaki under atomic attack, the city in the moments after the bombing of August 9, 1945, when the plutonium bomb nicknamed Fat Man detonated over its industrial and residential districts. The bombing killed tens of thousands of people within days and helped bring the Pacific War to an end. The caption card gives no date, and the record notes that its data is old and has been revised, so the attribution rests on the wartime military source. Aerial views from this period were often taken from aircraft flying alongside the bomber and were used to assess the damage.
