Titled "Craps: a busted game," this 1890 Currier & Ives lithograph turns a dice game gone wrong into its joke, with the caption's dialect spelling carrying the punchline. It belongs to the Darktown series, a run of racist caricatures that Currier & Ives and other New York publishers produced in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on minstrel-show stereotypes of Black Americans. Its exaggerated features and mocking caption were meant to amuse white audiences at the expense of Black people, so today it serves best as evidence of how popular print lampooned Black life and reinforced demeaning stereotypes.
