Rather than a plain board of scenery, this sheet turns the sugoroku race game into a satire on foreign visitors in Japan, with smoking and entertainers among its subjects. Sugoroku, a dice game played by moving counters along a numbered path toward a finish, was a familiar family pastime, so viewers of the period would have recognized the format and enjoyed the twist. The year 1860 falls just after Japan opened certain ports to foreign residence and trade, when such newcomers drew both curiosity and ridicule in woodblock prints. The record places this sheet in a satirical series, though its exact link to the game's rules is not documented.
