The title, The Game Cock / El gallo de pelea, is printed in both English and Spanish, and the bird is shown in full feather, the glossy, well-conditioned plumage that breeders valued in a fighting cock. Nathaniel Currier published this lithograph in New York around 1849, when inexpensive prints of sporting and rural subjects found a wide audience. The bilingual caption hints at the sport's reach beyond English-speaking buyers, since cockfighting was also popular across Spanish-speaking regions.
