Sir Mohawk and Nellie Sontag, a double trotting team, are harnessed side by side here, and the title stresses that the pair were full brother and sister, a detail that would have interested owners and sporting men of the day. Currier & Ives issued many lithographs of trotting horses in the 1880s, when harness racing drew large crowds to tracks across the country and the firm sold its sporting scenes to a broad middle-class market. The print is signed by the artist John Cameron and was published in New York by the firm.
