The caption names two Columbia players by position, Healy at tackle and Brown at center, and dates the picture to September 21, 1916, early in that college football season. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs taken for wire-service distribution in New York in the 1910s and 1920s. Pictures like this one were made to be printed quickly in newspapers, so they capture the teams and players of the day in a direct, unposed way. Its identification by position rather than full name is typical of the period's sports captions.
