A football in the foreground and Mickey Mantle standing behind his son make this frame stand apart from the many posed portraits of the Yankees star. The picture is a contact sheet frame by Thomas R. Koeniges, added to the library of *Look* magazine on September 27, 1968. That fall fell near the end of Mantle's playing career, which closed after the 1968 season. *Look* kept large photographic libraries, and its staff often shot informal moments like this one, away from the ballpark, to show athletes as family men.
