The team in this photograph is from the Eymard Seminary in Suffern, New York, where young men were trained for the priesthood, so the image pairs clergy with the baseball uniform, an unusual combination for a portrait of this period. The seminary was run by a Catholic religious community named for Peter Julian Eymard, and by the 1890s and 1900s many Catholic schools and seminaries had embraced organized sports as a way to build discipline and fellowship among students. Baseball was then the most popular team sport in the United States, and team portraits like this one, posed with bats, gloves, and a studio backdrop, were a common way for institutions to record their athletes. The photograph comes from the Wittemann Collection of sports images at the Library of Congress.
