This drawing shows a team of mules hitched to a supply wagon, with the driver seated among them, sketched at Culpeper Court House in Virginia on September 30, 1863. By that autumn, Culpeper was a major encampment for the Union Army of the Potomac, and the animals and wagons that moved food, ammunition, and equipment were as essential to the army's operations as the soldiers themselves. The drawing is one of the Civil War sketches given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919, and it preserves an everyday scene of army logistics that rarely appears in battle pictures.
