Among the many scenes of arrival in Buenos Aires, this photograph stands out for its focus on the cart itself, a horse-drawn wagon carrying newly landed immigrants through the city. Buenos Aires was among the largest destinations for European migrants in the decades before 1930, and a great many of them, chiefly from Italy and Spain, reached the city's port and moved on by whatever transport was available. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, whose photographs were gathered by a husband-and-wife team of travel writers and lecturers who documented daily life around the world. Notice how the crowded load and the animals show the rough, practical side of urban travel before motor vehicles became common.
