Madison, Indiana, sat on a bend of the Ohio River in 1866, a little more than a year after the Civil War ended. For decades the town had lived by river commerce, with steamboats carrying pork, grain, and manufactured goods up and down the Ohio, and its waterfront was the center of that trade. The Madison and Indianapolis Railroad, completed in the 1840s, climbed the steep hills behind town by an incline and linked the river to the state capital, bringing new traffic to a community that was still finding its place as railroads spread. Local residents in the postwar years would have known Madison for its hillside brick houses, its churches and schools, and its busy riverfront, and they were adjusting to a changed economy as rail routes began to draw trade away from the river.
