Few churches in New York carry a nickname as well known as the Church of the Transfiguration on East 29th Street, popularly called the Little Church Around the Corner. According to the familiar account, the name came from an undertaker who sent grieving theater people to this small parish when larger churches would not bury an actor, and the church later became known as a place where performers were married and buried. This c1900 photochrom, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, shows the building in saturated color, a process the company used widely for its travel views of the period.
