Few pictures on this board show a group of people rather than a monument, and this one places a cluster of Nubian figures in Wady Kardassy, a valley in the Nubian region of southern Egypt and northern Sudan. David Roberts, the Scottish painter, made the original sketches during his journey through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839. Louis Haghe then translated them into a color lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon in parts between 1846 and 1849. The plate reflects the European fascination with Nubian peoples and landscapes, and it was one of the works that shaped how Victorian readers pictured the region.
