In 1912 Wausau, a lumber town on the Wisconsin River in north-central Wisconsin, was still adjusting after the great pine boom, as its sawmills gave way to other enterprises. Aurora, Illinois, on the Fox River west of Chicago, had built its economy on factories and railroad shops, including the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy shops that employed many local men. Baseball between towns like these drew crowds from neighborhoods and nearby farms, and a game between the two sides was a point of civic pride for both. Amateur and semipro teams stood in for hometown identity in those years, before radio and motion pictures began to reshape how people spent their leisure time.
