Here the actor Samuel Anderson Emery stands full length as Robin Roughhead in *Fortune's Frolics*, holding a flail before a painted backdrop of mountains and a tree. The pose and props show how stage performers were presented in portraits of the period. The engraving used to identify the sitter was made from a daguerreotype by Mayall for a London theatrical keepsake volume, so this plate may be a copy of that earlier likeness, and the record credits Mathew Brady's studio with its production. Because the image is now very faint, the costume and setting are best read from the title and the engraving.
