Trenton's role as New Jersey's capital and its position on the Delaware River give this 1900 bird's-eye view its particular interest. Drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by O.H. Bailey & Co., the panorama shows the city as an observer would have seen it from above, with its streets and riverfront rendered in fine detail. Fowler produced many such views of American cities in the late nineteenth century, when growing manufacturing towns often commissioned them to show their full layout. Trenton was also the scene of George Washington's surprise attack on Hessian troops on December 26, 1776, a history that adds weight to a view of the city at the turn of the century.
