Unlike most recruiting posters of the period, this lithograph has no picture at all, only text that argues through quoted authority. Its headline accuses Germany of cruelty toward British prisoners of war and cites Lord Kitchener, then Secretary of State for War, who compared German conduct to the savagery of the Sudan Dervishes, and the Prime Minister, who promised reparation. Issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Office in London in 1915, when enlistment was still voluntary, it was part of a wider effort to turn reports of mistreatment into a reason to join the army. It is numbered 100 in its series.
