Many British recruiting posters of the First World War leaned on pictures, but this one is set entirely in type. Its headline, "Cold-blooded murder! Remember... Enlist to-day," asks the reader to set a list of charges against Germany beside a personal decision to join up. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee issued it in London, probably in 1915, as part of an effort to fill the ranks before conscription began in 1916. The text draws on the atrocity reporting that spread through Britain after the German invasion of Belgium in 1914, and the poster is one of a numbered series.
