Poster number 88 in the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee's series, "An appeal to you" was lithographed in color by Roberts & Leete of London and dated to about 1915. The committee was formed that year to encourage voluntary enlistment as Britain's casualty lists grew, and its posters were pasted on hoardings and walls across the country. Its title speaks directly to the viewer, and the tall sheet, about 98 by 63 centimeters, was built to catch the eye of passersby. Such posters show how the war was presented to ordinary civilians before conscription began in 1916.
