The Belmont coach named in this glass negative's title is a horse-drawn vehicle of the kind that carried passengers on fashionable routes in New York before the automobile took over city streets. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this plate sometime between 1900 and 1915, produced large numbers of views of American cities and landscapes for postcards and publications, and its photographers often recorded the everyday rhythm of streets and traffic. Coaches like this one, with their elevated driver's seats, mark a transitional moment when carriage culture still shaped how well-to-do New Yorkers moved through the city. The 6.5 by 8.5 inch glass plate holds considerable detail, which makes it useful for studying the vehicle itself.
