The pairing of the Murray Hill and Belmont hotels puts this view on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, where a cluster of large hotels grew up in the decades after the Civil War as the city's commercial and social center moved north. The picture survives as an 8-by-10-inch glass dry plate negative, a format that offered sharp detail for large-scale architectural views. It came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities, railroads and scenic sites roughly between 1890 and 1920. Its negative is held in the Detroit Publishing Company Collection at the Library of Congress.
