Two of the grand new hotels of Fifth Avenue share this view, the Gotham and the St. Regis, which stood near the corner of 55th Street and were among the city's most fashionable addresses when the picture was taken. The St. Regis, built for John Jacob Astor IV, opened in 1904, and the Gotham followed a year later, so the scene captures the rapid growth of luxury hotels along the avenue in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, was known for documenting American cities and landscapes for commercial sale. Its surviving negatives later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado before reaching the Library of Congress.
