Two of the grand hotels on Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan, the St. Regis and the Gotham, stand together in this view. The St. Regis opened in 1904 under John Jacob Astor IV, and the Gotham followed a year later, both part of a stretch that drew wealthy travelers and society events near 55th Street. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format that holds fine street-level detail. Its views record how this commercial avenue looked before automobiles and taller buildings changed it.
