Commissioner Young and the pilots of the steam pilot boat *New York* are the focus of this glass negative, which places the men on the deck of a working vessel rather than in a studio setting. Pilot boats cruised beyond the harbor to meet incoming ships and put a licensed pilot aboard, who then guided the vessel through the channels to port. Steam-powered boats like this one could reach ships faster than the older sailing craft. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its wide-ranging views of American life around 1900, made the image.
