Pilot boats like this one carried New York's harbor pilots out past the Narrows to meet incoming ships, where a pilot would climb aboard to guide the vessel through the crowded channels and up the Hudson or East River. Boats of this type were a familiar sight at the harbor entrance in the early 1900s, when steam-powered pilot vessels had begun to replace the sailing craft that had long served the trade. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American scenes for commercial sale, and it is one of the few records that show the working men of the port at sea rather than on the docks.
