Passengers are shown boarding the *Kaiser Wilhelm II*, a North German Lloyd liner that carried travelers between Bremen and New York in the early twentieth century. The ship was among the large German passenger steamers of its era, when transatlantic crossings were the main way to reach America and the gangways were busy with emigrants, business travelers and tourists. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographers documented New York's waterfront and its ships. The exact date is not recorded, so the scene is best read as a general picture of ocean travel before the First World War.
