This wood engraving opens the New Testament in a Holy Bible in the Library of Congress's Rare Book collection, and it introduces the Gospel According to St. Matthew, the first of the four Gospels. Wood engraving was a common method for book illustration through much of the 19th century because its fine lines could be printed alongside movable type. Matthew's Gospel was traditionally attributed to the apostle of that name and is generally dated to the late first century, so the image sits at the threshold between the Hebrew scriptures and the Christian texts that follow.
