Few buildings in Boston can claim the age and literary history of the Old Corner Bookstore at the corner of Washington and School streets. Built in the early 1700s and long remembered as one of the city's oldest brick structures, it became a gathering place in the 1840s and 1850s, when the publishing house Ticknor and Fields operated there and writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were among its regular visitors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many tourist views of American cities around 1909, recorded the building as the city's historic landmark, and the picture shows how the old brick front stood amid the busier commercial streets of that era.
