Carved in limestone and set on the Department of Commerce building on Constitution Avenue in Washington, this relief panel bears the odd title "A... B... C... D... E...," and it was made by sculptor James Earle Fraser, best known for the Buffalo nickel. The 1790 date points to the first federal census, taken under the new Constitution by federal marshals who went door to door to count the population. The panel is worth a close look for how it turns that early, labor-intensive count into a monumental record of the country's growth.
