This 1921 photographic print shows the Gutenberg Bible, the book that marks the start of European printing with movable metal type. Johannes Gutenberg produced it in Mainz around 1455, printing roughly 180 copies, and only about 50 complete or partial copies survive today. Its typeface and careful layout were meant to rival the handwritten manuscripts that wealthy patrons and churches had long valued. Looking at the page here, you can see how closely the printed letters imitate the look of a scribe's hand.
