Helen Keller is pictured here as an adult, a figure who became one of the most widely known Americans of the twentieth century. Struck blind and deaf by an illness in infancy, she learned to communicate through touch and the manual alphabet under teacher Anne Sullivan, and by the time this portrait was made around 1907 she was a Radcliffe student whose writing had already drawn public attention. Her memoir, "The Story of My Life," was a bestseller in those years, and the images that circulated with it helped shape how readers pictured her. The portrait's appearance in a books category reflects that link between her published work and the photographs that accompanied it.
