Titled *Silence*, this lithograph by Mabel Dwight was made around 1939 under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration in New York City. Dwight was known for pointed, socially observant prints of urban life, and the Federal Art Project's printmaking workshops let artists like her produce editions that could reach ordinary viewers, not only museum audiences. The WPA gave artists paid work during the Depression, and its graphic arts program did much to bring printmaking to the public. Its place on a board devoted to books also invites a look at how images and the printed page met in that decade.
