Kufic is one of the oldest forms of Arabic script, named after the city of Kufa in Iraq, where it was used in early copies of the Quran. This item is a passage from the Quran written in that angular, horizontal style, and it is held by the Library of Congress in its African and Middle Eastern Division. Because Kufic was used for religious texts well into the medieval period, it became a visual marker of the Quran's authority and an object of study for paleographers. Its broad, geometric letterforms also made it a favorite for decoration on architecture and ceramics, so the script often reads as much as an image as a text.
