The bridge in this view is the Grand Trunk Railway's Upper Steel Arch Bridge, which spans the Niagara River gorge a short distance below the falls and links the New York and Ontario shores. Its arch and the mill buildings along the river show how quickly rail and industry were reshaping the Niagara frontier around 1900. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method that layered several lithographic stones over a photograph, which the Detroit Publishing Company used to produce its views of American and Canadian scenery.
