Stenographers! Washington needs you!" is a 1917 recruitment poster that addresses young women directly and asks them to take government clerical work in the nation's capital. The United States had entered the First World War that April, and the federal government expanded quickly to manage the war effort, creating a large demand for typists, shorthand writers, and office staff. The poster, printed in New York by the Prudential Litho. Co., directs interested applicants to the nearest U.S. Employment Office, which shows how such appeals were distributed through local offices across the country. Posters like this one reveal how wartime labor needs opened paid office work to many women who had previously had few such options.
