A shortage of 5,000 stenographers gives this lithograph its urgency, and its taunt that "the Kaiser is afraid of you" casts clerical work as a form of war service. Printed in color sometime between 1917 and 1920, it speaks directly to women at a time when American men were leaving offices for the army and navy. Typists, stenographers and bookkeepers were needed to keep government departments, businesses and military headquarters running, and recruiting posters like this one encouraged women to fill those roles. The only attribution in the record is the signature "H.," so the artist remains unidentified.
