Addressed directly to a young man, this 1918 poster promises him a trade and a strong, healthy life if he enlists, a pitch that stresses future prospects as much as duty. Winsor McCay, best known as the creator of the *Little Nemo* comic strip, drew it for the *New York American*, a Hearst newspaper, as part of a numbered recruiting series. The United States had entered the First World War in 1917, and the Army needed volunteers, so posters like this one tried to make military service look like a route to skills and opportunity. Uncle Sam, a familiar national figure, appears among its subjects.
