The poster's message is a lesson in speed and technique: a soldier should fit his respirator correctly and quickly, and hold his breath while doing it. W. G. Thayer's color lithograph reflects the danger of gas warfare, which became a deadly reality when German forces released chlorine at Ypres in April 1915. Early protection was crude, often cloth pads soaked in chemicals, so drills like this one could decide whether a soldier survived a gas attack.
