Printed in Cincinnati and New York around 1897, this color lithograph advertises William Gillette's *Secret Service*, a play Gillette both wrote and starred in. Its military figures and pointing hands reflect the story of Union espionage during the Civil War. Strobridge was a leading American maker of theatrical posters, and its bold sheets were pasted on walls and billboards to draw audiences to the box office. The copyright notice dates the design to 1897, when the play was still being staged widely.
