Fort Richardson, one of the earthwork fortifications the Union army built in Virginia, is shown here with the heavy guns of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, the regiment that manned them. The forts were part of a large ring of defenses raised around Washington after the early setbacks of 1861, when Union leaders feared a Confederate advance on the capital. The record dates the image to 1861 but notes that the print was made later, so it reflects the look of the works in their first months. Its cannons and parapets offer a useful view of how the capital's defenses were built.
