John Brown stands at the center of this lithograph with a rifle and a Bible, two emblems that together suggest the fierce moral certainty Curry gave the abolitionist. The print reproduces a figure from Curry's mural *Tragic Prelude* (1937–1942) in the Kansas State Capitol, which shows Brown during the violent struggle over slavery known as Bleeding Kansas. Curry, who was raised in Kansas, signed both the stone and the sheet for this 1939 edition of 250. It offers a useful view of how Depression-era regional painters turned frontier history into national subject matter.
